Rony Seikaly on exclusive Interview with Out Now

Despite early sporting success as an NBA basketball star, music has always been Seikaly’s passion. The Lebanese/American DJ and producer have played every major club worldwide and has shared the stage with luminaries such as Marco Carola, Damian Lazarus, Guy Gerber to name a few. Since 2010, he has released on labels including Suara, Saved, Yoshitoshi Recordings and many more. Last year he began his own Stride Records imprint and continues to run his radio show ‘Sugar-Free Radio’, now in its sixth year.

He recently released a documentary on his life with CloseUp360, which really showed the amazing journey he’s had, from war-torn Beirut to Global NBA Star, DJ, Producer, and Real Estate Mogul. He’s worked incredibly hard and that has paid off.

Where are you from? I’m from Beirut in Lebanon but live in Miami Florida. I spent a few years living in Athens when I was growing up too.

When did you start making music? I started making music about 15 years ago, but have been DJing since a young age. I’ve always loved music, and I’ve always had a club in my house from when I was fourteen and made one in my parents’ garage!

How do you describe your music? Probably groovy, happy underground!

Favorite moment from your career?

Everything has had special meaning, but playing home in Lebanon and/or Miami has always been my favorite.

Obviously playing Amnesia in Ibiza one summer was also a total dream come true.

Who is your biggest musical inspiration?

I think Danny Tenaglia, back in 1999. The way he went through different genres within a set, he took you on a journey that never got boring. The way he went from genre to genre was really clever, he’s amazing.

What is your producing software? I use Ableton.

What other things do you do besides making music?

I play sports and am involved in real estate.

What is your favorite track of all time? Too hard to pick this one!

What is your best-producing tip?

The best thing for any producer is to make sure the kick and the bass fit in nicely and to make sure the story you’re trying to tell comes out properly. Sometimes I think less is more, and obviously, less is much harder to deal with, so if you can follow less is more and still create something special, that’s amazing.

Why did you start making music?

I always wanted to learn how to make music; then once I started, it became an obsession!

What are your upcoming gigs? Summer will be quite busy as usual, I'll go to Portugal, Belgium, China, Japan, Thailand, I love playing in New York. I’ve been playing there for a long time. New Yorkers know their music, it’s always fun to play for a crowd who knows their stuff and comes to listen to the music.

What are your goals for the future? Music is a passion. I don’t have a goal.

What advice can you give for the young music producers/DJs:

Be yourself – you have to come up with your own style, your own technique, and creativity, so you can stand out from within your style.

Please write a message to your fans:  Thank you for always supporting, it means the world to me when I put so much time and effort into creating my own style that people recognize it.
