Exclusive Interview with James Waves
Out Now Magazine New Star Contest Winner
Where are you from?
I am from Chicago, Illinois
When did you start making music?
I started playing guitar when I was around 12. I’ve only been producing for about 3 years now, so I am excited to learn more about the production side.
How do you describe your music?
I have a lot of different influences, but I started off listening to a lot of rock when I began playing guitar. I would listen to anything with cool guitar riffs, like Jimi Hendrix, Stevie Ray Vaughan, and John Mayer. Recently, I have been listening to a lot of hip hop, Neo-soul, jazz, and funk music.
Favorite moment from your career?
My favorite moment was when I played at the house of blues in Chicago with my rock band, Gorilla Social.
Who is your biggest musical inspiration?
My musical inspirations are always evolving, but a few of my favorite players are Tommy Emmanuel, John Mayer, and Kevin Parker. I have also been getting into a lot of house and dance music lately.
What is your producing software?
I use ProTools. I started producing about 2 years ago and have been learning so much about the audio engineering side of music creation.
What other things do you do besides making music?
I like to work out, sail, travel and hang out with my friends.
What is your best-producing tip?
My best production tip would be to try and reverse engineer what your favorite artists are doing. Start with the simple foundation and build from there. Youtube has a lot of helpful production tips. I’m constantly learning new methods and approaches to take myself out of my comfort zone.
What is your favorite track of all time?
That is tough to say, but pretty much any Tom Misch track right now
Why did you start making music?
I started making music because I got bored of learning everyone else’s songs. I think thats just part of being a musician. It’s important to learn a bunch of different styles to mix together your favorite ones and develop your own sound.
What are your upcoming gigs? I play in 2 bands: Gorilla Social and The Delta Waves. The best way to find out give would be to check our upcoming gigs on Spotify or check out our facebook or website.
What are your goals for the future?
My goals for the future are to keep improving at my songwriting, playing, and producing. I want to increase my presence/steams on the streaming platforms and play some festivals with my live groups.
What advice can you give for the young music producers/DJs?
Just keep practicing and challenging yourself. If you get good at a certain technique, go learn something you aren’t good at to develop a wholesome understanding of your craft. There is no final goal, or “I’ve made it” moment to your music career. You will hit milestones as you start gaining more experience but just remember it’s supposed to be fun and thats the main reason we are doing this in the first place. Also collaborate with other artists. It’s great to see how other people approach music.
